Lewis is a young man with autism and an incredible talent for music. He joined a pilot scheme and received £250 to make a difference in his life. Lewis decided to use the money for accordion lessons and worked with a Community Broker to explore options.
Getting Started
They quickly realised Lewis needed his own accordion for lessons. The broker found a shop and explained Lewis’ situation. The shop owner, impressed by Lewis’ talent, offered to deliver the accordion to him. When Lewis picked up the accordion in the shop, he played so well that the owner was amazed. This led to lessons with a renowned tutor at the Royal Conservatoire, thanks to a connection made by the shop owner.
Lewis’ Achievements
Lewis’ talent and story were shared widely. The Really Terrible Orchestra commissioned him to compose a piece of music. He also attended the Robert Burns World Federation Conference, where he recited “Tam O’ Shanter” to dignitaries. Additionally, Lewis had a work placement with Centre Stage, helping organise music for a choral group.
Lewis’ Mum’s View
“What started as a search for accordion lessons turned into so much more. The brokerage looked at Lewis’ whole life, not just one remit. Now, Lewis is a true citizen, an employer, and a friend. He teaches others, earns money, and his confidence has soared. We feel privileged to have this support, which has helped Lewis’ music flourish. People genuinely want to see him succeed. I used to worry about his future, but now I see a clear path. He’s happy, safe, and doing what he loves, all thanks to self-directed support.”
